Science: faith of fact? (1)

Philosophy of science, including relation science-faith, from a Christian philosophical perspective

In our postmodern culture in which world view and ethical positions are considered to be subjective, science is often considered to be ‘neutral’, objective in its presentation of reality. On the other hand some try to dismiss scientific results as ‘just another opinion’! Which is correct? Does science present just another faith, or facts? Or neither of the two?

Science embodies a particular approach to reality, a set of methods to study reality that leads to a special kind of knowledge. What is the character of that knowledge and what does that mean for its value and limits? What does that mean for the relationship between science and beliefs (world view, religion)? This will be approached from a Christian (reformational) philosophical view of reality. In this approach doing science will be presented as social practice that embodies a variety of normative principles and rules.

This course helps students to reflect on their study and help them to get a better understanding of the strengths and limits of the scientific approach of reality and how to relate scientific practice to world view (faith)

Science: faith or fact? (2)

Philosophy of science, including relation science-faith, from a Christian philosophical perspective

This course builds on the course Philosophy of science in period 1. With the use of the concept of science as a normative practice the structural role of world view in doing science will be indicated and discussed. Several models of the relation between science and faith will be presented briefly and discussed. A balanced view of science in which the particular character of both science and (religious) faith as well as their limitations will be presented. These issues will be illustrated with discussing the debate about evolution theory, evolutionism, intelligent design and faith in a Creator who made everything.

7 zonden, 7 deugden:
